The Mountain Dulcimer is also known as the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer, Lap Dulcimer. The Dulcimer is the oldest instrument in America. The Dulcimer is believed to be the only instrument invented in America. Some People believe the Dulcimer originated in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia.

The Dulcimer almost went extinct in the early 20th century due to the introduction of guitars and banjos to the region. The Dulcimer had a resurgence of sorts that took place in the early 1950 with the Urban/Folk revival.

Dulcimers have two basic shapes; the most widely used shape is the Hourglass, the other is the Teardrop. Both shapes of the Dulcimer have a distinctive sound.
